It's Honey for the Sweet Win!

Local Task Force Nominates Main Ingredient in Quest for
Orlando Signature Dish

 Competition kicks off Oct. 2, to include both public votes and food experts' panel

 ORLANDO, Fla - Like any good recipe, the search for a dish that represents Orlando is starting from the beginning: A signature ingredient has been decided - local honey - representing the diversity, sweetness and unique attributes of Central Florida.

A group of area chefs and food and beverage specialists met with Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Visit Orlando destination experts to consider exploring a signature dish for the region. The idea to focus on a culinary competition to showcase local honey grew from that initial challenge.

"A signature dish doesn't happen overnight; ultimately it grows organically over time. This initiative is a first step in starting the conversation as to what dish the community thinks represents Orlando. In the process, we continue to expand people's awareness of the rich and unique culinary offerings found throughout our region," said Mayor Jacobs. "We are an incredibly diverse destination, which makes this both a challenge and an opportunity for everyone."

Why honey?

Due to its temperate climate and agricultural origins, Central Florida has long had an abundance of local crops and plants that contribute to numerous flavors of honey, including gallberry, saw palmetto, blueberry, Brazilian pepper, and - of course - popular orange blossom from the region's once-flourishing citrus groves.  The state produced 17 million pounds of honey in 2016.

"Florida has the largest variety of honey - more than any other state in the U.S.," said Orange Blossom Beekeepers Association's communications director Beth Fox. "The diverse ecology in Central Florida, in particular, yields a wide variety of nice honey flavored by different wildflowers."

"Our climate is conducive to nearly continual honey-making, as Central Florida has lots of flowers and botanicals blooming all year long for the bees," said John Rife, the founder of local-sourced food hub the East End Market in Orlando (and a philanthropic beekeeper himself). "And it's part of our history - growing up with orange trees in the back yard, watching bees pollinate." It's also a way to help fight the trend of declining honey bees nationwide, Rife notes.

Because of this mild climate, beekeepers from around the country also migrate to the state every winter to rebuild their colonies - trucking in about 280,000 colonies each year. The number of registered beekeepers in Florida has more than quadrupled in the past decade (4,500 in 2016), with about 500 new beekeepers registering each year, many in Central Florida, according to the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

From a chef perspective, honey also was a natural choice agreed Chef Julie Petrakis, co-owner of several local restaurants, including award-winning The Ravenous Pig, and a participant on the task force. "We use local honey in so many ways; it's so versatile, has many flavor components and is locally sourced and authentic to our region. It's been an inspiration for many of our dishes, as it can be both sweet and savory."

Destination executives will use the challenge to showcase Orlando's culinary offerings. "The significant depth and breadth of Orlando's dining experiences have grown and become a vital part of the destination for visitors," said George Aguel, president and CEO of Visit Orlando. "This initiative celebrates the culinary talent in our region, unites the community through a friendly competition, and allows us to create some great  ‘buzz' about Orlando's dining scene and chef artistry."

Competition criteria

The culinary competition kicks off this fall and is open to all Orlando restaurant chefs. Dishes can be submitted now through Oct. 1 on VisitOrlando.com/Dish, and public voting takes place Oct. 1 through Nov. 3.  The public will determine the top candidates and a panel of national and local food experts will it narrow down to the final winner. Dish criteria are:

  • local honey must be a key ingredient;
  • the dish must be a dessert;
  • it is available to the public in a restaurant or food venue;
  • only one entry per restaurant.

Let the voting begin!

Beginning Oct. 2, diners will find a list of participating restaurants and their respective honey dish "candidates" on VisitOrlando.com/Dish.  The dessert will be featured on each restaurant's menu, and the public is encouraged to try each one and vote for their favorite throughout the campaign (Oct. 2 - Nov. 3). Votes will be cast and tabulated on VisitOrlando.com/Dish.

Visit Orlando will promote the competition with ongoing social media, and the public can join the conversation through the hashtag #MyOrlandoDish.

And the winners are...

In November, the field will be narrowed down to the Top 10, based on the desserts that received the most votes.  The finalists will then re-create their dish for a panel of food expert judges, who will choose the winning dessert. The winner will be announced in December.

    Orlando Thanks Visitors in a Big way for Making it No. 1 Destination in U.S.

     Sets Guinness World RecordsTM Title; Sending Thousands of Hand-written "Thank You!" Cards to Visitors

    ORLANDO, Fla., (May 11, 2017) - Orlando took the concept of appreciating its visitors to unprecedented heights today as it achieved a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM title, gathering thousands of hand-written thank you cards from local attractions and hotels to mail to actual visitors who supported the destination in 2016.

    The event was launched in conjunction with the announcement of the annual number of visitors who came to the destination. The destination announced a record 68 million visitors.

    Dedicating this announcement to these individuals, Visit Orlando and the tourism community set out to show their appreciation by saying "Thank You!" in a grand way.

    Visit Orlando unveiled its new milestone visitation number by setting the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title Most greetings cards collected in 24 hours during a gathering of more than 900 members of the tourism community. The event was held to celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week.

    "Orlando's visitation number represents the emotional connections we make with millions all over the world. The love they show us never ceases to inspire us, and led us to launch a year-long campaign around two important words: thank you," said George Aguel, President and CEO of Visit Orlando.

    As a way to say thank you to Orlando visitors in 2016, the Orlando tourism community came together to handwrite 3,144 thank you cards for #OrlandosBIGThankYou. "Orlando and Orange County continue to be the number one vacation destination in the nation," said Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. "But this wouldn't be possible without the many millions of guests who choose to come here year after year for our world renowned attractions and entertainment options. However, what truly makes their experience here better than any other community is our culture of hospitality combined with our front-line hospitality workers and welcoming residents."

    "Having had the pleasure of visiting Orlando, Florida on multiple occasions in recent years for GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempts, we can fully appreciate the positive sentiment behind this extraordinary collection of Thank You cards. Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month Sets New Record
    Raising $195,125 to Benefit Russell Home

    ORLANDO, FL (December 13, 2016) - Through the generosity of Visit Orlando, 96 local restaurant and thousands of diners, the Russell Home for Atypical Children received a record donation of $195,125 today. Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month sponsored by American Express generated an unprecedented contribution for a local charity that cares for special needs children and adults. Since 2009, the program has raised more than $650,000 for local charities.

    "This program changes lives," said George Aguel, president and CEO of Visit Orlando. "Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month is one the best examples of tourism coming together to help at a local level."

    Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month takes place each September, offering locals and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy Orlando's nationally recognized culinary scene through three-course prix-fixe dinners for $33. As the charitable beneficiary, the Russell Home received $1 from every meal served.

    "The restaurants and Central Florida community who participated in this year's Magical Dining Month are our heroes, along with Visit Orlando for planning and coordinating this incredible event each year," said Vantrease Blair, executive director of the Russell Home for Atypical Children. "The day we received the call that we were chosen as the beneficiary, a flood of joyful tears came to all of us. We were honored to be the charity of choice."

    The Russell Home is the first non-profit institution in the country to provide a home atmosphere with a family structure for special needs children and 'child-like' adults. In continuous operation for more than 60 years without any government support, the home also provides 24 hours of free respite care and free day care for the local families with special needs dependents.

    The funds raised by Magical Dining will enable the Russell Home to modify and refurbish the girl's dorm as part of the home's major renovation project. The dorm will be named after Visit Orlando and Magical Dining Month.

    "Magical Dining Month has been the largest fundraising event we have ever experienced and it is life-changing for the girls who are receiving new dorm rooms and bathrooms. Words cannot express our gratitude." added Blair.
